Advisory Committee

Committee Membership for the Ph.D. Degree

The committee will consist of five or more active members of the graduate faculty; at least two members must be from the graduate major program. One or more members must be from outside the major graduate program that will be chosen to represent the minor or related area. Refer to the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management Faculty list to identify graduate faculty in department-associated programs. The outside committee member cannot have a budgetary connection with the thesis adviser or hold an adjunct position within the department.

Thesis Adviser/Chairperson

The thesis adviser will serve as chair of the committee.

Identifying Committee Members

The student, in consultation with the thesis adviser, will propose members of the advisory committee. The proposed committee membership will be submitted to the Graduate Program Head for confirmation and appointment. Proposed members may decline the opportunity to serve.

Establishing a Committee

The committee will be established soon after the student has passed the Candidacy Examination.

Responsibilities of the Committee

  1. To approve the student's thesis research proposal and coursework plans.
  2. To be available for consultation with the student on an individual basis.
  3. To participate in annual progress meetings
  4. To read and evaluate the thesis.
  5. To administer the student's comprehensive and final examinations.

Meetings of the Committee

  1. Approve proposed coursework (see "Summary of Graduate Coursework for Ph.D. Degree" form).
  2. Presentation and approval of thesis research proposal.
  3. Annual progress meetings.
  4. Comprehensive examination.
  5. Final examination.
