Pennsylvania Tree Farm Committee Notes

Posted: July 14, 2016

Second Quarter updates from the Pennsylvania Tree Farm Committee.

Thank You to the Thistles

The Pennsylvania State Tree Farm Committee would like to thank Gay and Harold Thistle for hosting an exceptional Tree Farm Field Day in late May at their picturesque property in Greene County. Fifty Tree Farmers and conservationists from across Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, and West Virginia attended.

Audit Completed

The State Tree Farm Program just completed the program’s third-party assessment conducted by Pricewaterhouse-Coopers in conjunction with the American Tree Farm System. We want to thank the fifteen Tree Farmers who participated in this process. The effort and time commitment involved by these Tree Farmers and their respective foresters, who spent many hours preparing the required paper work, was very much appreciated. The properties visited ranged from the northeast part of the state down to the southwest, including the counties of Bedford, Cambria, Centre, Clinton, Lycoming, Luzerne, Pike, Somerset, Susquehanna, Union and Wayne. The Tree Farms were visited over a four-day period in early June and served as excellent examples of diverse private forest landowner stewardship. A written report of the assessment results will be available in September.

Help Advance Certification in Pennsylvania

Interested in leadership opportunities in the Pennsylvania Tree Farm Program? Tree Farm has solidified its certification program. We have new guidelines, a leadership manual, strategic plan, and communication documents. A new MOU has been signed with the American Forest Foundation and plans are in the works to partner more closely with the Pennsylvania Forestry Association. We need leaders to move our certification program forward!

If you’re a Tree Farmer and interested in stepping up to advance certification in Pennsylvania, we welcome your voice and energy! Please contact Rich Bugher, PA Tree Farm Administrator, for more information.
