The Penn State Cooperative Extension Geospatial Technology Program has been conducting ArcView GIS workshops since 1996 and over this period of time our instructors have trained many hundreds of people in how to effectively utilize this software. Our training material has been developed utilizing local Pennsylvania GIS datasets and exercises are geared towards practical applications. Training is conducted using our mobile GIS lab consisting of twenty Dell laptops and can be scheduled at any location in Pennsylvania by request. Each student receives an instructional manual developed and certified by Penn State University along with a cd-rom containing all the data used in the workshop so that the student can repeat any of the exercises at a later date. Our instructors are available after the class as well to assist students if they need help going through the exercise a second time.

Just click on the course name for a course description and then you can click to register for any class. Some of our classes are held in conjunction with other organizations and in some cases you must register with the sponsor organization instead of us. If one of these dates or locations does not suit your organizational needs please contact us directly to arrange for a class of eight or more at your location.

Inquiries for custom classes can be sent to lalwebmaster@psu.edu. We can also customize our training to focus on specific needs or modify our classes to use your organizational data. If there are topics you would like to see in a future workshop please let us know.

How it Works

Our classes can be held upon request in your area using our mobile wireless GIS lab, which consists of 20 Dell laptop computers. Classes are coordinated through and may be held at the Penn State Extension office in your county or at a facility you provide. We require a minimum of 8 students to hold a class; the maximum class size is 20 people. However, if you wish to share your workstation with a second person, the second person receives a 30 percent discount on the tuition. There is a 10% discount for groups of eight or more people.

All classes begin at 8:30am and run until 4:30pm.

Are you a 4-H teacher? Or a teacher who works with younger students? Check out our 4-H GIS modules for youth.
