Where can I get soils data?

Detailed soils data for the counties of Pennsylvania is available in two places.

County soils coverages that have been SSURGO certified are available from The National Soil Survey Center. Soils coverages that have not yet been certified are available from the Pennsylvania Map Compilation and Digitizing Center.

At The National Soil Survey Center, you should follow the link to Detailed Soil Data for GIS (SSURGO) and note that STATSGO data is also available here if you desire. Next you will follow a link to Download SSURGO Data. You will have to create an account here and/or log in. Once you log in, you will be taken to a page with buttons for each many counties across the United States. When you click on the button for a county, you will reach a download page which allows you to download the data in several formats and metadata. You will need to get the Arc/Info Export Files.

To obtain non-certified data from the Pennsylvania Map Compilation and Digitizing Center, follow the link to Digital Soils Downloads. Next click on the link to the FTP Site and you will have to enter some contact information. Once you have done so, you will be taken to a page with links to all the non-certified data sets in various formats, arranged by county. You will need the ARC format files. (The version listed for the files refers to data revisions, not a software version that you will need.)
