About Soils Data Table Structure

Questions about the data tables and conceptual structure of soils data:

The two most used soils databases are the State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) and Soil Survey Geographic (SSURGO).

Each polygon represents a soil map unit.

Soil not only varies over the surface, but also changes as you dig deeper into the ground. Soil horizons are layers of soil that are approximately parallel to the surface.

Each polygon represents a soil map unit. The map units have up to three named soil components and each component has up to six horizons.

There are twenty-two data tables that are part of a SSURGO soils data set.
