Principles of Aboriculture

This course provides an overview of the concepts and methods prescribed for the evaluation and care of large trees in urban settings.  Students should have completed coursework in biology and soils.  The objectives of the course are to be able to characterize tree health, diagnose problems in trees, predict how environmental factors influence tree health, and assess hazard trees.  Proper pruning techniques, factors affecting long-term tree care in urban areas, controlling insects and disease, tree inventory, tree valuation, site drainage, and legal issues will be discussed.  Evaluation methods include quizzes, exams, and attendance.  This course is offered every spring.
