An update from the Pennsylvania Tree Farming Committee

Leadership Changes on Pennsylvania’s Tree Farm Committee

In the last issue of Forest Leaves, we announced the Committee Chair position transitions and this issue brings more changes. Dave Steward has been the State Committee Treasurer for the past ten years, and, while he’ll still be around to share his valuable experience, Dave decided to step down as Treasurer effective at the end of 2013. We wish to thank Dave for his many years of commitment to the Tree Farm program, dating even further back than his years as Treasurer. At the same time, we are very happy to announce that Jackie Waldorf has agreed to become our new State Committee Treasurer. Jackie brings a wealth of experience to the position, as she and her husband Dennis have been past state Tree Farm Chairs and are no strangers to the Program. Jackie’s dedication and experience will make for a seamless transition. The State Committee thanks both Jackie and Dave for all their years of commitment.

Mark Your Calendars for the 2014 National Tree Farmer Convention!

For more than twenty years, the National Tree Farmer Convention has brought together Tree Farmers, forestry professionals, and friends who all share a passion for America’s private woodlands. Pennsylvania has the honor of hosting this year’s convention, and you’re invited!

Join us at the 2014 National Tree Farmer Convention, July 17-19 at the Westin Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The 2014 event will feature what attendees love: a line-up of educational sessions on topics ranging from wildlife management and marketing your timber, to the generational transfer of your land. The event will conclude with a great field day at John Burnham’s Tree Farm. John was Pennsylvania’s 2010 Outstanding Tree Farm of the Year. There will be optional tours for you to discover some unique Pittsburgh experiences, and of course the chance to meet up with old friends and make new ones.

Registration for this event is open until June 13, 2014 – for detailed information on the concurrent sessions, speakers, a schedule of events, optional tours, hotel and transportation and more, visit the website.

Of Interest to Inspecting Foresters

The American Tree farm System (ATFS) has developed an app to help make inspections easier.

In an effort to streamline inspection data collection, the Konformance application has been adapted to meet Inspecting Forester’s needs. After downloading the app to your iOs or Android device (works on both smartphones and tablets), you can sync all your assigned initial inspections and reinspections to your smartphone or tablet. You can also complete on-the-fly reinspections if you visit a certified Tree Farm.

Please contact Nephtali Chavez, the ATFS Certification Coordinator, at, if you have any questions or feedback about the new ATFS Inspection App.
