Updates from the Pennsylvania Tree Farm Committee

Why Join a Woodland Group?

As the growing season winds down and the active management season ends, it is time to seek out opportunities to learn more about how to best manage your land. There are many national and Pennsylvania groups to join that can offer information on how best to manage your woodlot. Groups like the Pennsylvania Tree Farm, Pennsylvania Forestry Association, National Woodland Owners Association, and/or your local woodland owners group all have websites, publications, and meetings helpful to woodlot owners. The list below highlights the benefits of joining. (This list is adapted from a piece published by the Maine Woodland Owners.)

Meetings that offer information on:

  • Management techniques and strategies
  • Available programs and services
  • Taxes and estate planning
  • Markets and utilization
  • Wildlife and ecology
  • In-field demonstrations
  • Hands-on experiences
  • Interaction with others with similar interests
  • Opportunity to question experts
  • Chainsaw safety
  • Pesticide applicator certification

Newsletters offer:

  • Referral to sources of information
  • Reliable information on local forest issues
  • Information on forestland activities

Satisfaction in being part of a movement to:

  • Ensure the viability of small woodland ownership (no woodlot is too small)
  • Promote responsible management of woodlands
  • Benefit Pennsylvania's environment
  • Assure the quality of our air, soil, and water
  • Maintain and improve wildlife habitat
  • Sustain our renewable resources for generations
  • Enhance Pennsylvania's unique rural character
  • Seek new avenues and opportunities for financial sustainability
