Join in on the 2023 Forest Landowners Conference

University Park, PA – February 24, 2023 – If you’ve not already heard, the 5th Biennial Forest Landowners Conference is happening March 24 and 25 at the Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center in State College, PA.

Join the James C. Finley Center for Private Forests at Penn State, numerous natural resources partners, and hundreds of woodland owners at this event to build connections, learn, and support the good care of your woods.

This educational and networking opportunity brings together people who want to know more about forests. Whether you own forested land, hope to one day, or serve as an advocate for woodlands, join others who share your interests and get the knowledge and tools you need to care well for your woods.

With dozens of presentations offered during four learning sessions on Friday and five on Saturday, attendees can choose from a broad range of topics aimed at growing knowledge, building skills, and increasing enjoyment of the woods. There is also ample time to network with other woodland owners around excellent meals and refreshments.

Some of Friday’s presentations include: identification of common trees, creating habitat for forest birds, Pennsylvania ticks, following your log from harvest through to finished product, pitfalls to avoid in managing your forest, conservation easements, getting starting in maple syrup, and many more.

Some of Saturday’s presentations include: forest carbon, pollinators in the forest, biochar, herbicides and invasive plant management, slash walls to exclude deer, managing your forest for wildlife, chainsaw maintenance, riparian buffers, and many more.

Check out the Finley Center’s conference page for presentation descriptions and, soon to come, times: https://ecosystems.psu.edu/research/centers/private-forests/outreach/conferences/2023-flc

In addition to the presentations, there are options for in-depth learning through workshops and tours and an exhibit hall to find the resources to help you care well for your woods.

An opening keynote with Jennie Stephens, executive director of the Center for Heirs’ Property Preservation, will kick off the conference on Friday afternoon. Scott Weidensaul, ornithologist and author, will offer the Friday night banquet keynote address. Akiva Silver, author and owner of Twisted Tree Farm, will wrap up the conference with the closing keynote Saturday afternoon.

Registration and conference details are available online. If you haven't yet, register for the conference at https://extension.psu.edu/forest-landowners-conference. Or call 1-877-345-0691. Conference registration is $145 for the full two-day conference, with single day rates offered. Participation in a Friday morning workshop or tour or the Friday evening keynote banquet have additional fees. Scholarships are available.

 Please register by March 16th.
