The late Chris Cornell sang about a black hole sun in the 1990s but today we get to experience it for real. There will be a total solar eclipse today that passes over the U.S. Pennsylvania is, unfortunately, not in the path of totality but about 75-80% of the sun will be blocked by the moon depending on where you are in the state.

How will this affect wildlife? Solar eclipses are rare and critters are likely to be confused. Will it affect behavior? Movements?

Well, we cranked up the numbers of locations on some of our collared deer to see. Starting yesterday, locations for several of our GPS collared deer are taking locations every 15 minutes. This will continue through tomorrow.

We aren’t the only ones looking at the eclipse’s effect on wildlife either. The Wyoming Migration Initiative will be looking at their collared deer and there are even some apps to log animal sightings.

We’ll let you know what we find out. Happy viewing!
