Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Welcome
We welcome you to our department! The Department of Ecosystem Science and Management has an active Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) Committee in place to create a place of welcome for all members of our community. The committee is comprised of volunteer members, including students, faculty, and staff at different career levels. The committee works to offer events and activities that promote IDEA learning and build community.
Vision
Foster an inclusive departmental culture in which all are listened to and valued, recognizing that all perspectives and talents are needed to fulfill our commitment to safeguarding Earth's ecosystems for a sustainable future.
Mission
- Actively promote a diverse and inclusive ESM community.
- Our goal is to empower students and department members to have the greatest effect in the communities to which they belong and/or will soon become members upon departing the institution. Though we recognize multiple levels of community, our sphere of influence is concentrated on creating a welcoming space of inclusion and belonging within the ESM department, while our efforts should filter up to the college, academic institution, and the broader community.
- Identify and address formal and informal obstacles to equity for all people involved and invested in the ESM department.
- Create a culture of belonging and enhance the educational and professional outcomes of all, especially underrepresented and marginalized members of our communities.
- "Underrepresented" describes a condition that results from being marginalized in our institutional, social, and/or political systems.
