Pennsylvania artist Stacy Levy and Penn State soil scientist Patrick Drohan teamed up to address the question...."How can we value nature through artistic and scientific methodologies? Lead artist on the Acid Mine Drainage and Art project (AMD&ART, 1994-present), Stacy Levy, and director of the Penn State's Soil Characterization Lab, Patrick Drohan, attempt to answer this question based on shared ideas on the kinship between science and art. In a series of e-mails and face-to-face conversations, Levy and Drohan exchanged ideas about the meaning and function of the soil and their own approaches to protecting it. Both agree that when it comes to soil restoration and reclamation, a solutions-oriented approach is just as important as fundamental science and environmental aesthetics."
