Penn State collaborated with the Lupton Family, PA Bureau of Forestry, and State Parks to host the 2023 2023 Northeast Regional Soil Judging Competition. The contest practice sites were on the Lupton family property in Sylvan Grove and the contest was near the Moshannon State Forest HQ. S.B. Elliott State Park allowed us to use pavilions to shelter students. The focus this year was on periglacial soils with silty mantles derived from the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. Schools came from across the region. The University of Delaware won with second going to Delaware Valley University, and third to the University of Maryland; Penn State hosted and thus will attend nationals too.
