B.S. Wood Utilization, 1956

Malcolm H. Stehman, a native of Lancaster County, PA, completed a baccalaureate degree in Wood Utilization at Penn State in 1956. During his undergraduate years he was captain of the Mont Alto Rifle Team and participated in Air Force ROTC. He was a member of the Sylvan staff, the Forestry Society, and the honorary fraternity Xi Sigma Pi. He received several scholarships including one from the National Lumber Manufacturers Association that recognized him as one of the four most outstanding forestry school graduates in the nation and provided a monetary sum as well as ten weeks of on-the-job training at the Washington, DC, lab of the Timber Engineering Company (TECO). He then joined TECO until entering the service.

After serving six years in the U.S. Air Force as a Strategic Air Command combat crew navigator and instructor navigator, Stehman left the Air Force with the rank of Captain. He spent his Wood Products career as superintendent, plant manager, complex manager, sales manager and vice president in many locations across the nation with Westvaco, U.S. Plywood, Champion International, and Georgia Pacific. He retired from Georgia Pacific in 1996 as manager of eastern U.S. particleboard and medium density fiberboard manufacturing (five plants). Stehman is recognized as an industry leader in particleboard and medium density fiberboard new plant operations in the United States and abroad.

Stehman has been a Rotarian, chairman of the Production Management Committee of the National Particleboard Association, CEO of the Mississippi Manufacturer's Association, chairman of the Ole Miss Engineering School Advisory Board, has served on The Alpenfest Committee in Gaylord, Michigan, and has participated on the Chamber of Commerce at several locations.

Mac and his wife Joan have endowed two scholarship awards at Penn State. One is the "Joan and Malcolm Stehman Scholarship" in Wood Products created in 2001 and intended for a student who has a career interest in the management, marketing, processing, or manufacturing of wood products. The second is the "Joan L. and Malcolm H. Stehman Trustee Matching Scholarship" created in 2006 with a $50,000 commitment and first preference given to a Wood Products student.

The Stehmans currently live in Roswell, Georgia. Four married daughters and six grandchildren live in the Atlanta area.
