Steven F. Resh

Steven F. Resh earned a B.S. in Forest Science at Penn State in 1974 and an M.S. in Forest Product Utilization in 1983 from the University of Maine where he completed a thesis on the suitability and yield of red maple flooring.

Steve's forestry employment began with a temporary position with the U.S. Forest Service, Forest Inventory and Analysis Unit, in Upper Darby, PA. He then taught forestry at Unity College in Maine for nine years and at the University of Kentucky for one year. In 1986, Steve joined the faculty at Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) in Cumberland, MD. Since 1992 he has served as the Coordinator of Forestry Programs at that institution. He was promoted to full professor in 2003.

In addition to overseeing all administrative aspects of the ACM forestry program, including student recruitment, budgets, placement, alumni activities, and faculty/staff supervision, Steve teaches eight forestry courses each year to approximately 20 students per class and is also an academic adviser/mentor to 30 students per year. He led the efforts to update the forestry curriculum and incorporate advanced technologies at ACM.

Steve received ACM's Distinguished Faculty Award for Service to the College in 1998 and 2010, and in 2011 he was chosen by his peers as the Sanner Award recipient for Outstanding Teaching at Allegany College.

Steve has been an active member of the Society of American Foresters (SAF) since he joined in 1976. He has served the SAF Maryland/Delaware Chapter as treasurer, vice-chair, and chair, and currently serves as secretary/treasurer of the Allegheny SAF. He introduced the concept of, and developed the original rules for, the Student Quiz Bowl that is held annually at the Allegheny SAF winter meeting. He has served on and chaired SAF's Forestry Technology School Recognition Committee. The Forest Technology Program at ACM was among the first five schools in North American to become accredited under the new standards adopted by SAF. In 1996, the SAF Maryland/Delaware Division honored Steve for his Outstanding Service to Forestry, and in 2008 he was elected SAF Fellow by his peers. This February, Resh was awarded the "Robert W. Bauer, Outstanding Service to Forestry" award by the Allegheny Society of American Foresters

For the past 25 years, Steve has prepared and hosted the Maryland State FFA Forestry Contest on ACM's campus. Since 2005, he has volunteered as curriculum director at the Natural Resources Career Camp, a co-ed, weeklong resident camp sponsored by the Maryland Association of Forest Conservancy Boards. Steve also served on the Board of Governors of the Maryland Forests Association (2003 -08) and in 2010 he was appointed to the Allegany County Forestry Board.

Steve's community service has included serving as treasurer for the LaVale Athletic Association; coaching youth football, baseball, and softball; and serving as Cubmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, and Troop Commissioner with the local Boy Scouts of America groups. He has been an active member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church where he is a lector, Eucharistic minister, and a member of the Building Committee.

Resh who resides in Cumberland, MD was raised in Hanover, PA and is the son of Ed and Ethel Resh who still reside in that York County Community. Steve has been married to Catherine Resh for 36 years and together they are the proud parents to Edward, Vincent and Maggie Resh. Recently, they welcomed the addition of Lisa Jordan Resh to their family as Edward's wife.
