Understanding the role of tree and forest decline events in a changing world of weather extremes and introduction of exotic pests and disease agents, particularly beech bark disease, butternut canker and myriad others.
Opportunities to locate and select for disease resistance to Beech Bark Disease and Butternut Canker are presented in the context of understanding the role of tree and forest decline events in a changing world of weather extremes and introduction of exotic pests and disease agents. Included in the presentation are examples of current exotic and native pests and diseases on important mixed hardwood and conifer forests. Mention of important selection pressure challenges across North America is presented in an effort to show how forest conditions are constantly changing in reaction to current selection pressures.
